Getting Started

Learn how to use the Appliance Service to communicate with appliances and their Minion:

Sign in.
Add users.
Activate an appliance.
Specify an OpenNMS instance.
Create a monitoring location.
Assign a Minion.
Create a schedule for software updates.
Display appliance’s geographical location.
View a Minion Appliance in the OpenNMS UI.

Before you begin

Before you begin with the Appliance Service, make sure you have the following:

One instance of OpenNMS running OpenNMS Horizon 30.0+ or Meridian 2022+.
At least one Minion Appliance connected to the network.
OpenNMS configured for Minion/Minion communication.
Messaging infrastructure (ActiveMQ or Kafka).
Access to the appliance’s network.
The URL for the OpenNMS Portal (https://portal.opennms.com/).
Primary contact username and password.

If you plan to deploy hundreds or thousands of appliances, you may want to use external REST APIs to automate some of the process. See Deploy Multiple Minion Appliances via REST API for more information.
